Minister’s Message MAY-2014

To the members and friends of Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church;

“Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.”

                        Luke 24:29

One of the fascinating resurrection appearances of Jesus is on the road to Emmaus, where he joins two of his followers on their way home, but they don’t recognize him.  They pour out their sadness and pain on the death of their Saviour, and he interprets for them the Scriptures about himself.  When they arrive at their house that evening, Jesus is about to bid them farewell and walk on, when they offer him the invitation, “Stay with us.”

So Jesus stays with them.  The interesting thing is that it is when he sits to eat with them, and offers bread in a way that is reminiscent of the Last Supper, they suddenly realize that their companion on the road all along has been Jesus himself.  He disappears, but in a second their fear and loss are replaced by joy and hope, and they immediately make the return trip to Jerusalem to tell the others.

Imagine what they would have missed if they let him go his way.  What an opportunity came to them because they offered basic hospitality.  What insights?  What new learning?  What unexpected blessing may come to us as individuals and as a congregation, as we open ourselves up to the newcomer and invite them to “stay with us”?

In Christ,
