Minister’s message Jan 2015

To the members and friends of Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church;

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1

Christmas lights disappear, the decorations will soon be tucked away until next year, the echo of the carols rings only faintly in our ears, and we know the annual celebration of the birth of Christ winds down for another year. It comes up so quickly, leaving us rushing to get everything done, and then suddenly it’s over. Time rushes by. And the more Christmases we have seen, the more quickly they are gone.

And tonight gives us another reminder of that same thing. At New Years we talk of the ups and downs of the year past and wonder about the possibilities of the year ahead, but the actual moment of clock hitting midnight may speak to us not so much of times past or future, but of time passing.

The writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us that there is a time for everything, and perhaps more deeply, that all our times are in God’s hands. Maybe we could make the turnover from one year to the next a moment for sacred reflection. What has been the record of my faithfulness in the past year? How attentive have I been to the voice of God? And how open will I be to God’s possibilities for me and for my church in the year to come?

By the Spirit of God, may we give ourselves again to Christ’s work in the world, and offer over to him our living out of the gift of these times.
