Minister’s Message June 2014

To the members and friends of Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church;

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a

living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

                                                Romans 12:1

God knows our communities and the world need more from the church than well-crafted words or religious ideas.  People around us need us to put our whole selves on the line.  We become living sacrifices as we commit all of who we are – our thoughts, our choices, our actions, our comfort, our security, our time and money, our love and prayers – for the sole purpose of being mediators of God’s grace in the world.  Are we up for that?

Paul reminds us that this is an act of worship which goes far beyond that hour on Sunday to some that involves our entire existence.  Our whole life becomes a prayer, our every action a hallelujah, each breath an expression of God’s love.  We can begin to focus on it.  Can every word we utter be a word of healing?  Could every moment be somehow filled with the holy?  Could every person we meet be someone we can bring a blessing from God?  There is no telling what a living sacrifice like you or me might accomplish.

I heard someone say once in reference to the verse above that the problem with living sacrifices is that they keep crawling off the altar.  May our offering to God come with the commitment to stick with it through thick and thin, an ongoing act of worship which is holy and acceptable to God.
