Lorna MacLachlan
For today’s performance you can expect original music but don't let that scare you. Lorna’s music is uniquely hers but easy to understand as her focus is on the commonalities we all share. She has been writing, arranging and performing her own music for several decades. “I’ve always written, it is my first instrument”, explains the composer. Her music contains elements of the classical music she studied for the first 3 decades of her life as well as folk and Jazz. Lorna has studied with Canadian composers Gregory Levin, Allen Bell, and pianist David Braid as well as, Don Thompson, Phil Dwyer and Hugh Fraser and Maria Schneider, to name a few.
Lorna has provided award winning original music for Theatre, Dance and National media companies (CBC, Access Network) as well as a variety of commercial and artistic enterprises across the spectrum of music genres. She has recorded six full length albums of original music and has had support from FACTOR, the Alberta Foundation for the performing arts as well as the Canada Council. She continues to work on commissioned pieces for various groups but much of her focus today is writing for large and small jazz ensembles.
Today’s trio has Lorna on piano and voice with Richard Harding on Saxophones and Andre Wickenheiser on trumpet. Many of her instrumental works are written for this instrumentation and specifically these two wonderful musicians.
Lorna has always been passionate about music education and believes strongly in helping to develop the talents of the next generation. She has taught privately as well as for the public and private school boards and has been recognized nationally for her dedication to excellence in music education specifically in Choral music and Jazz.
“The freshness, honesty and depth of Lorna’s work places her alongside some of Canada’s finest in jazz and creative Music.” Laila Baili
