Who Cares is a music collective formed in 2020 between violinist Laura Reid and flautist Jiajia Li. With similar training backgrounds in classical music, the aim of the project was originally to provide personal and musical support for each other during the pandemic, while searching for new ways to present classical and contemporary music. Through livestreams and music videos, they have been able to connect with fellow musicians and music lovers alike, discussing topics ranging from music to self- care along the way. Having released two previous EPs and with their music videos having reached thousands of viewers, the duo pushes forward in their unique presentation of contemporary classical music with their latest EP, Simple Lines of Enquiry.

Laura Reid - From a Suzuki violin kid through an orchestral career, Laura now plays classical music on formal stages, contributes to recording projects, and improvises and collaborates within the experimental music community.

Initially formed as a way to provide personal and musical support for each other throughout the pandemic, Who Cares quickly became a way for flautist Jiajia Li and violinist Laura Reid to push boundaries within the framework of classical music. Having long since stepped out of the classical music mould and into spaces of experimentation, improvisation and even popular music, they began to search for sources of sonic and creative freedom within composed works.
On the new EP “Simple Lines of Enquiry”, the duo follows a thread started on their previous album, to create new arrangements of music originally written for entirely different instrumentation. The EP focuses on Canadian music composed in the last 20 years, featuring composers from different generations and backgrounds, each with their own musical language.
In this concert, you will hear music from their latest EP; Calgarian composer Arthur Bachmann’s piece; American pioneer composer Pauline Oliveros’ text score; as well as some classical traditions that everything else was built off.
