The German Canadian Male Chorus of Calgary, directed by Susan Woodward and accompanied on piano by Liz Tremblay, has been singing locally, nationally and internationally for over 50 years.
The love of German folksongs brought an original group of 10 men together, one of whom still sings in the choir. The choir is committed to promoting German music, but incorporates repertoire in other languages into their programs as well.
Members of the choir also represent many different cultural backgrounds besides German – they include Dutch, Hungarian, Austrian, English, Welsh, Spanish and, of course, Canadian.
In May of this year the choir toured to Germany and presented concerts in conjunction with other local choirs in Stadthagen (northern Germany) and Huegelsheim (southern Germany) as well as singing in churches and cathedrals, including the great cathedral in Strasbourg (Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Strasbourg) during a day trip to France.
The choir is thankful for this opportunity to sing for Music@ Noon presented by Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church.
